The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, on Vice President Joe Biden’s unequivocal statement at today’s AARP Iowa forum in support of expanding Social Security benefits:
“At today’s forum, Joe Biden stated: ‘We should be increasing, not decreasing, Social Security. It’s within our capacity to do so.’
Biden is absolutely right. We applaud him for joining Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the rest of the Democratic Party in support of expanding – never cutting – Social Security’s modest benefits.
We continue to have differences with Biden on other issues, particularly Medicare for All. He needlessly scared seniors today by telling them that it would mean “Medicare as you know it goes away.” In fact, Medicare for All would greatly improve the program for current beneficiaries.
That said, we are very pleased that Biden has embraced increasing Social Security benefits, which is both wise policy and winning politics. Democrats are united around Social Security expansion.”
